When you need to heat up a small space, it is practical to use a small heater rather than spend more on energy by putting on a regular room heater. They are available in different kinds – kerosene, electric, wood burning or gas. Portable heaters are convenient and fast but they are not a very safe equipment to have around. Certain dangers are highly possible and extreme care should be taken when using them. In fact, firefighters advise against using them in homes.

If you cannot avoid using portable heaters, take the time to read the manufacturer’s instructions and follow the suggested safety tips. This will include making sure that the cords are in good order; not frayed broken or damaged. The heater should always be attended to when in use; it should be shut off and unplugged when nobody is in the room. When in use, keep flammable materials away from it including clothes, curtains, paper and flammable liquids. Very important! Keep children and pets away from portable heaters.
