The goal of any backpacker is to bring down the load he is carrying to the lowest weight possible. He balances this with not overlooking things that will make the trip safe and comfortable. The sleeping bag is the single biggest item that a backpacker needs to take along. He has to make sure that he is bringing a sleeping bag that will be just right for the adventure that he is embarking on. He should also try to bring a lightweight sleeping bag.
One big decision is whether he should go with a down sleeping bag or a synthetic bag. Down bags are much more compressible than the synthetic ones, so they take noticeably less space in the pack. They also can be rejuvenated by throwing them in the dryer with a shoe. This “fluffs” up the down. With proper care, a down sleeping bag can live on for years and years.
